Liz Miller

Gerry GoertzLiz has developed a strong passion for community building and credits the African philosophy of Ubuntu for inspiring her career goals.

Leadership Asheville appeals to Liz because it serves as a foundation for individuals to develop valuable skills that will benefit both themselves and the community as a whole.  Liz believes that a strong community isn’t the result of just one person’s actions, but is the result of many people contributing their unique inputs.

Some of Liz’s interests include creative writing, wildflowers, live music, traveling, healthy cooking, collecting earrings, and giving presents.

The following are two of Liz’s favorite quotes:

Ubuntu is the essence of being human . . . we say a person is a person through other persons. You can’t be human in isolation. You are human only in relationships. ~Archbishop Desmond Tutu

A traveler through our country would stop at a village, and he didn't have to ask for food or for water. Once he stops, the people give him food, entertain him. That is one aspect of Ubuntu but Ubuntu has various aspects. Ubuntu does not mean that people should not enrich themselves. The question therefore is:  Are you going to do so in order to enable the community around you to improve? ~Nelson Mandela
