Leadership Asheville 21
- Economic Development Project
This team participated in the initial stage of cataloging the local and regional resources available in our economy. Team members conducted personal in-depth interviews at business sites and UNCA business students. Specific questions were designed to determine how effective service providers are in helping businesses, to identify gaps in existing services, and to assess performance of UNCA students in a real-world information-gathering situation.

- Education Project
This team created a colorful and informative brochure summarizing why a potential mentor is needed - and what a small commitment it is. The second section of their project was to create a resource packet for school principals, PTA presidents or anyone else to use to start a mentoring program. It offered handouts about the impact mentors have on students, ideas for mentoring projects, guidelines for finding and approving mentors and a sample application. Both the brochure and resource packet was put on a disc that would be available to any school to format for their schools specific needs.

- Infrastructure Project
This team conducted a walk-ability assessment to promote less automobile traffic and more physical activity in the community. They utilized the City of Asheville and Buncombe County Geographic Information System (GIS) databases to complete segment identification and analysis. Using the tool on the reverse, information was collected for each street in their areas of interest. Once the final scores were determined, each assessed road segment was assigned a color: the warmer the color, the more walkable the street. Our end result was a color-coded street map.

- Quality of Life Project
This team adopted Go To Goal! (a newly grant funded, nonprofit program reaching out to girls from low-income families living in the Asheville/Buncombe community through the sport of soccer) to support and guide in their first year of existence. They helped design a logo and publication of a program brochure supported the programs kickoff event and refreshments, developed and produced a video to spotlight the project and enhance fund-raising for sustainability, head speaking engagements to promote the program for future funding sources, and developed an evaluation instrument for the girls’ teachers to measure the programs success.

- Governance Internship Project
This team developed an internship project for an Asheville High School student. The internship was based out of Superintendent Robert Logan’s office and which included visits to and observations of nonprofit board meetings. The student will complete workbook activities and will provide reports on board meeting visits and shadowing experiences in fulfillment of the outlined internship credit program at Asheville High School. The student will be selected through the process used at AHS for selecting interns. The goal of this project is to provide a guided, experiential learning opportunity that will promote the student’s understanding of nonprofit board governance.
